Beginning and Beyond Child Development Center, participant of the Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) project, along with instructors Carla Delcambre, PLA (Landscape Architecture), Julieta Sherk, PLA (Horticultural Sciences), and their students are the recipients of a Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance in the Public Service category. These awards recognize new contributions to the aesthetics, character, and environmental appearance of the City of Raleigh. The Public Service category is given to groups or individuals who have created and implemented projects of any scale to an environment within Raleigh.
The Natural Learning Initiative at the College of Design, NC State University offered a symposium, Design for Early Childhood Health and Outdoor Learning, to early childhood and associated professionals within and close to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. This symposium was held on the Central Piedmont Community College Harris Campus in Charlotte, NC.
We explored ideas on how to design, plan, and manage the outdoor environment for early childhood through plenary presentations and hands-on sessions.

We explored ideas on how to design, plan, and manage the outdoor environment for early childhood through plenary presentations and hands-on sessions. Taking advantage of the resources available at the NC Zoo, participants discovered new approaches to using the natural environment to engage children in learning and discovery, while at the same time promoting healthy activity and nutrition.

The Natural Learning Initiative at College of Design, NC State University offered a one-day symposium, Healthy Early Childhood Outdoor Learning Environments, to early childhood professionals within and close to the Triangle Area. The goal of the symposium was to raise awareness about the role of the outdoors for early childhood healthy development and offer innovative ideas and concepts for participants to implement.
The symposium explored ideas on how to design, plan, and manage the outdoor environment for early childhood through plenary presentations, hands-on sessions, and tours of the POD3 Lab Site, First Environments Early Learning Center.
The POD Wake County Gathering and Tour presented a showcase of the progress in creating naturalized childcare center Outdoor Learning Environments (OLEs) in Wake County.
Presentations and bus tours to the POD Wake Co demonstration OLEs show how the Preventing Obesity by Design program supports children’s outdoor activity and engages children in gardening, healthy eating, and outdoor learning.
This year locations included Johnson Pond Learning Center, A Kind Garden, and Raleigh Nursery School.
In 2015, your POD-Wake and Wake County Smart Start colleagues shared their progress in creating rich, developmentally appropriate naturalized OLEs. Technical presentations, showcase displays, and a bus tour to three of eight POD-Wake OLEs demonstrated how the POD approach can lengthen time outdoors, increase physical activity, engage children in gardening, and support outdoor learning.
During this tour we visited ABC Land, Inc., Beginning & Beyond Child Development Center, and A Safe Place Child Enrichment Center.
More and more people are living in cities. To encourage families to invest in urban domestic life, an infrastructure of attractive, traffic-protected routes is required to connect urban neighborhoods to meaningful destinations. This year’s symposium focused on urban neighborhood design for children and families and the foundation it provides for health, well-being, and resource conservation in the 21st century.

The 5th annual Growing in Place Symposium was presented March 16, 2012, in concert with the 9th annual Urban Design Conference, Urban Reset, held the day after, on March 17, 2012, also in downtown Raleigh.
At the Growing in Place Symposium we heard from leading experts on urban pathways, the significance of parks, urban “wildlands,” urban food systems, and how young people and families can be engaged through playwork and cultural animation.
